Home Security – Window Bars

home Security

Security bars, burglar bars and window bars are all terms used to describe a physical barrier installed over a window opening in order to discourage unauthorized entry by an unwanted party. They create a visual and a physical deterrent to home invasion. While most bars are not 100% burglar-proof, the time and effort required to compromise the barrier will likely outweigh the risk of trying to gain entry. Remember, a criminal wants to get in and get out as quickly and as quietly as possible. There are plenty of unprotected homes which provide an “easy target” for those committed to unlawfully enter.

A large percentage of home invasions and burglaries are initiated by breaking windows to gain entry. This is especially true with ground floor windows and those that are protected from a direct line of sight. Those located at the rear of a home or obstructed by vegetation are particularly at risk.

Windows located on the ground floor, in the basement or the garage for security bars. Don’t forget to secure the openings of outbuildings, as well.

Security bars can either be installed on the outside or the inside of a window. Each option has its advantages. By placing burglar bars outside a window, it provides an instant visual deterrent to someone contemplating unlawful entry. In most instances that will be enough to discourage the intruder from attempting to enter. By placing the bars inside a window it’s generally more aesthetically pleasing from the exterior. Although there are a variety of decorative designs available, some owners are “put off” by the penitentiary look. Another advantage to those mounted inside the glass is that the invader would have to break the glass in order to even gain access to the window bars.

They would then have to go to work getting past the bars. This would draw attention by creating unwanted noise. An intruder would much prefer an easier break-in.

It is important to note that window bars can be very dangerous to a home’s inhabitants if some key points are not observed. Imagine being trapped by fire and being unable to escape due to security bars that cannot be easily opened from the inside. The same can be said about being trapped inside, should an intruder somehow manage to gain entry. It’s imperative to have a quick release mechanism in place to allow for easy and practical escape from the inside of the home. Do not utilize a lock that requires a key or combination to disengage the unit. The release mechanism should also be simple enough for a small child or an elderly person to operate. All family members should be trained to escape a variety of situations. Additionally, make sure the security bars are compliant with all local building codes.

Home Security – Swimming Pools

home Security

Is your swimming pool safe? Here are some facts to consider:

• A person can drown in a few inches of water within a few seconds.
• Most child drowning accidents (and deaths) occur while the victim is being supervised.
• In most instances the child was out of sight for less than 5 minutes.
• Most drowning victims are under the age of 5.
• More than 300 children, under 5 years of age, drown in swimming pools, in the U.S. each year.

A drowning typically happens very quickly and without warning. When the safety of loved ones is left solely to the watchful eyes of humans, the chances of an incident are far greater. Implementing mechanical swimming pool security precautions can’t completely guarantee against accidental drowning, but it certainly can minimize the risk. Security fencing and a wide variety of alarms are readily available to assist with swimming pool security.

Perhaps the most simplistic and most commonly overlooked security feature is fencing.

Fencing can be permanent or removable. In its simplest version, one can purchase mesh nylon fencing that can easily be attached to existing columns or attached to decorative posts that are placed around the perimeter of the pool. Prefabricated metal panels are also an attractive and affordable option.

Assuming you have fencing in place, gate alarms are a very effective safety feature. The alarm is mounted directly on your pool’s gate. They are battery powered and emit a loud alarm when the gate is opened and the magnetic field is broken. The alarm can be temporarily disabled by when an adult presses an override button. Installation is simple. One minor drawback would be the need to constantly monitor the battery strength to ensure the alarm is functional.

When the pool is accessed by a door leading from the house, an audible door alarm is a valuable security item.

As the door opens a loud beep or chime is heard. Door alarms can be powered by batteries or the home’s electrical current. Sometimes these alarms become a nuisance due to the fact that they’re activated every time the door opens. This can be annoying when adults or older children create the primary flow of traffic. Consequently, if the alarm is disengaged to avoid the annoying sound, you’re left with an unsecured entry point for your pool. Window alarms operate in similar fashion and might be of use if the pool could be accessed by opening a window.

Perimeter alarms use laser (infra red) light to create an invisible beam of light around the pool. When the beam is broken, by someone (or something) walking through it, it will cause the alarm to sound. The installation is very flexible but appropriate measures should be taken into account. It should be mounted low enough that a crawling child would activate it. However, be mindful that if a large pet has access to this area, it will constantly trip the warning device. Perimeter alarms can be rather expensive.

Wrist alarms are a relatively new product. These alarms are placed on the child’s wrist and locked into place. The wrist alarm communicates with a base station. The alarm on the base station is activated when the wrist alarm becomes submerged in water. A single base unit can support several compatible wrist alarms, making them reasonably inexpensive. Be warned, however, that these units are not operable in salt water.

Certainly any one of these security measures will help to create a safe swimming environment. However, it might be wise to consider a combination of these safety measures. Losing a child to a drowning accident is a horrible tragedy, but the odds can be greatly reduced by utilizing some of these options.

Home Security Alarms

We depend on home security systems to take good care of our homes. Home security alarm systems are the best defense system against danger. And if you’re thinking about installing a home security alarm, then you must learn more about them and the way they work. Interestingly, home security alarms are available since early 1900s. However, the early models were quite cumbersome and expensive to use then. Unlike the early alarms, today home security alarm systems use electric circuit which is altered when the window or door is opened. The alarm triggers when the code of the homeowner is not entered into the system in time. Most alarms are even connected to the switchboards which can contact the police as and when the alarm is activated. When you choose to buy a home security system, you will have to decide whether to opt for a wireless or a hard-wired one.

The hard wired systems are quite complicated to install. Wired systems work best when used during the construction of a new home. On the other hand, wireless home alarm systems include few parts. However, wireless ones need some regular maintenance in order to function effectively. If you select wireless home security system, then you also require deciding upon whether to get it powered by batteries or electricity. If you select battery-operated mode, then you can still secure your home when the power is cut off. But, you will have to check their batteries at regular intervals. A home security system works as a closed circuit all around your residence. A trigger, like a button or sensor is installed in the doors and the windows that are the main entry points for the burglars. When the window or door is opened the system turns on and sounds the emergency alarm. Home security alarms are a great boom. Some of the security systems even use the specialized motion sensors. These help to trigger the alarm or to turn on the lights if any motion gets detected within your home. All of which adds a special security cover for your home. Therefore, to ensure a quality investment, you must take the best precautions. There are a wide variety of home security systems available in the market. These include motion detectors, glass break sensors, smoke detectors, fire detectors, IP security camera and so on. And to get quality service for the investment made, you must always select the trusted providers. You need to take some time to identify any kind of a security threat. Likewise you can buy the best quality systems available in the marketplace. Check out few details at the first place. For instance, if you are selecting IP security camera, then you must select the best quality product present in the market.
